Unlikely Records is a series of digital images that seek to document speculative forms of life that elude conventional notions of what defines life and the living. These records are part of the project We Follow the Salt, the Water, which explores the possibilities of non-human agency both on and beyond planet Earth. It asks how natural environments known as terrestrial analogues perceive and imagine matter, energy, and life in the universe. The Sonoran Desert is considered one such analogue due to, among other things, its sites with highly saline environments inhabited by microorganisms called halophiles—organisms that resist and require these extreme conditions. The project focuses on these organisms and their ecological relationships both on and off the planet.
Furthermore, the project is deeply interested in the search for speculative ethics and ways of relating through these connections. It asks: How do these sites and the life forms that inhabit them perceive and generate alternative ways of care and responsibility? How do these practices reshape our understanding of ecological issues and our relationship with the environment? How is it possible to live a life where life seems impossible?
